Mission Bay High opened its doors In 1953. Pacific Beach had been long awaiting its own high school and previous to the opening of the school students attended La Jolla High or Point Loma High.

The Mission Bay High's mascot is a buccaneer. "Buccaneer n. any of the freebooters preying on Spanish ships and settlements esp. in the West Indies in the 17th century; pirate."
Over the years, the orignal Buccaneer has changed to be more 'politically correct' than in the past. The original "Buc" image to the left was outside. The image below, recreated by Rick Bundschuh, is how the "Buc" appeared inside of the gym.

In 2010, the "historic logo mural project" was completed, thanks to a generous $500 donation from the Pacific Beach Town Council and a matching contribution from alumni Howard and Lisa Barton, Friends of Pacific Beach Secondary Schools and, the MBHS Alumni Association.
