Next MBHSAA event being planned for Homecoming 2008:

The MBHSAA is currently planning for our next event at Homecoming 2008. The date will be determined in in spring 2008

Remembering Alumni Heroes through Memorial and Buccaneer Spirit:

Dear Alumni, please read the article below on the status of the Vietnam Memorial plaque and fountain which is located near the auditorium.

This month, Principal Cheryl Seelos reported to Friends of PB Secondary Schools (the joint PTO between PBMS and MBHS) that the newly initiated MBHS Junior ROTC had taken this project with grants and a donation from Friends of PB Secondary Schools, however, at least $1000.00 of additional funding is needed.

If any alumni are interested in donating funds directly to this restoration project please send checks to:
    MBHS Alumni Association
    1380 Garnet Avenue, Suite E442
    San Diego, CA 92109
Please put a note on the check indicating: "Vietnam Memorial"

Vietnam Memorial - Remembering Heroes Through Memorial and Buccaneer Spirit
By Catherine Downey, Heather Stark & Kristine Perkins

Did you know that Mission Bay has a Vietnam Veterans memorial on campus? No? Well you're not alone; many students are unaware of this memorial. The dedication was built in 1970 to honor six students turned veterans who graduated from Mission Bay. The veterans whom the memorial is dedicated to lost their lives in the war. The students were Walter B. Stevens, David J. Rose, Richard A. Friend, William L. Fix, James P. Gulie, and Charles H. Goldmeyer.

For years the memorial was recognized for its beauty and revered for its significance by students and teachers alike. It was once a beautiful fountain located near the front gate of the school, in the background can be seen the large, glass windows of the lobby in the auditorium right next to the Weedpatch. It was given recognition in the Beach and Bay Press in 1990, and in The Beachcomber in 1998, but since has faded into the background. It has become a piece of Mission Bay history that privileged few have ever heard of.

Now it is time to revive this monument to the Mission Bay veterans. In a letter to the Beach and Bay Press Rita Gaffney Price, Mission Bay Class of 1968, said, "I was very disappointed in the condition of the area of the Vietnam War Memorial at the school." With the help of Mission Bay's AVID class and Mrs. Devore, she has recently petitioned Home Depot for a donation, and has made one herself for the restoration of this memorial. With the project approved by Principal Cheryl Seelos we have the means to beautify the spot to its former glory.

2007 - MBHSAA will be hosting our VIP "All Alumni Party" every year at Homecoming

All Alumni Kick Off Party Update:

The “All Alumni Kick Off Party” was held October 12, 2007 and, we are pleased to report, was a success!  Thanks to Dennis Pugh, MBHS Athletic Director, our VIP tents were set up in the end zone area of the field which made an exciting game even better.  In addition to the tents, silent auction, merchandise table and delicious food and beverages -- we had prime seating set up for the near sell out game which our alumni football fans really enjoyed.  This event was a first time, special arrangement just for the MBHS Alumni Association and offered a fabulous view of the game which, by the way, MBHS won 31-28 in over time against Serra!  It was a nail biter…

But enough about football, Class of ‘77 was hosting their 30th reunion the same weekend and invited their reunion attendees to meet at the game. A fabulous idea Lynne at Reunion Specialists was able to coordinate for us.  Since our data base is just getting up and running, Reunion Specialists also were also gracious  enough to send out an e-mail blast to all their numerous  MBHS alumni contacts with our event invitation  It was fun seeing Class of ’77 reunite and we thank them for the delicious BUC cake donation to the event!   It made the day even more festive.  All in all, we had over 80 people in attendance and signed up 60+ new members.  We made about $2,000 in merchandise sales, memberships and donations which is welcome “seed money” for future events. SEE THE EVENT PHOTOS BY CLICKING HERE !

MBHSAA will be hosting our VIP “All Alumni Party” every year at Homecoming (The 2008 Homecoming date will be available early Spring 2008)  This is a convenient and fun venue to start a class reunion weekend or just a casual class gathering.  The “All Alumni Party” is free to alumni with a paid admission to the game.  If you are a LIFE or SUSTAINING member entrance to the game is free when you show your membership card at the ticket office.

It is a goal of MBHSAA to start alumni traditions on campus and we are off to a good start.  Please join us next year!  Everyone commented how much fun it was to be back at a football game, hearing the great jazz band play once again, seeing old friends, meeting new friends  and cheering on our team.   On behalf of the MBHSAA it was our pleasure to host this event and alumni from Class of ‘56 through Class of ‘07!  We look forward to many years to follow…

(September 27, 2007)  The California Surf Museum is pleased to be honoring San Diego surfing figures Larry Gordon and Floyd Smith (Gordon and Smith Surfboards) at its annual Old Timers' Day, Sunday, October 7. A large turnout is expected to pay tribute to the two gentlemen who, in 1959, introduced the G&S logo to the world and put together one of the finest pools of surfer/shaper talent ever. Larry and wife Gayle, who still reside in the area, and Floyd and Sherry, who will be coming down from Rescue, in Northern California, will all attend. "The first surf shop in San Diego, Gordon & Smith, went on to become one of the top manufacturers in the industry" Action Sports Retailer, 1990.

The event will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Oceanside Civic Center Library's Community Rooms, across the street from CSM, Old Timers' Day is open to the public. A Hawaiian-themed buffet is available for $12, children 12 and under, $5; RSVPs for the luau are a MUST! 760-721-6876.

As in past years, the Moonlight Beach Strummers and Dancers will provide a magical backdrop. Be sure to bring your G&S surfboard to put on display for all to enjoy for the day. Anyone who shows up with a G&S board will get a free luau ticket, and there will be additional prizes for the oldest board, the most unique, and the board that has come the farthest. How about a prize for the oldest G&S T-shirt? This will be a lot of fun! Also, photos and other memorabilia that you may wish to share for the day are always welcome. Over the past four decades, the G&S brand name has been established worldwide as on of the leading producers of surfboards, skateboards and clothing" Larry Balma, Publisher of Transworld Skateboarding, 1999.

Pacific Beach Native brings music back to Mission Bay High School

(Pacific Beach, CA)        September 21, 2006.  Long time Pacific Beach residents and alumni of Mission Bay High School fondly remember instructor Ray Vinole and the success of the popular Mission Bay High School Jazz Band.   Many MBHS students were inspired by Mr. Vinole but one of his students, Pacific Beach native JP Balmat, sought to return to MBHS and teach music.  This Fall Balmat’s vision came true!

“This is my dream job”, states Balmat. “After I heard Mr. Vinole was retiring all I wanted to do was instruct the jazz band – and maybe even take it a little further.”  Balmat attended Kate Sessions Elementary, PBMS and MBHS.  He was in the band at PBMS and then went on to be the student band director at MBHS and played the saxophone and clarinet in the Jazz Band under Ray Vinole and Everett Crouse. Balmat graduated from MBHS and went on to SDSU where he majored in Music Education and graduated in Spring 2006.

Originally, it was planned that MBHS and PBMS share a music instructor between the schools in order to start the music program for Fall 2006.  However the new 4x4 scheduling format at MBHS allowed students to have electives and the enrollment in music was staggering.   In fact, there were so many students enrolled at MBHS for Fall 2006 that Balmat was required at the school full time.  PBMS currently has a music teacher every other day teaching two sections of 7th graders.

This year Balmat teaches a Beginning Band class for students who have never picked up an instrument, Concert Band where the Beginning Band students will move into and a Jazz Band class which is traditional Dixie Band with modern and jazz influences.  Currently, the Jazz Band has 12 students and a singer.   Balmat is already in the process of looking for venues and rebuilding the success of the Jazz Band.  The Jazz Band’s first venue was a recent MBHS home football game and they will be participating in the Thanksgiving Jazz Festival at the Town & Country Hotel.  Balmat’s goal is to participate in the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in May 2007.

Friends of Pacific Beach Secondary Schools (FOBPSS), the joint parent/teacher organization between PBMS and MBHS, were successful in raising over $10,000 in support of bringing music back to PBMS and MBHS.  “It has been proven, students who participate in music programs are more likely to succeed” states Marilyn Zanchetta, President of FOPBSS.  “We are thrilled as an organization to be able to supplement the music program financially and JP is the perfect person for MBHS.  PB families should be very excited --- a strong music program in addition to the prestigious International Baccalaureate program.  I have to say amazing transformations are happening at MBHS and in our cluster!”

States Balmat,” This is my alma mater.  I spent four year in band at MBHS loving what I was doing. Now I get to come back and I’m getting paid for it.  I couldn’t be happier!”

Mission Bay High School to offer prestigious international baccalaureate program in fall

PACIFIC BEACH, CA, – (May 17, 2006) – Mission Bay High School will be the second high school in San Diego County to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme this September.   The International Baccalaureate program is the most prestigious college prep program in the world and after two years of hard work, preparation and training, this highly recognized organization has finally accepted Mission Bay High School's application.  States Principal Cheryl Seelos, “This is a very rigorous, challenging program for motivated learners and an exciting addition to the academic curriculum in the Pacific Beach cluster schools.”  According to Newsweek magazine, “Six of the top ten public schools in the nation are International Baccalaureate schools.”

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a recognized leader in the field of international education, encouraging students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. Founded in 1968, IBO currently works with 1,785 schools in 122 countries to develop and offer three challenging programs to more than 200,000 students aged 3 to 19 years. IBO offers a continuum of high-quality education that encourages international-mindedness and a positive attitude to learning. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, which will now be offered at MBHS, is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.
Pacific Beach Middle School, Mission Bay High School’s feeder school, is also an International Baccalaureate candidate school.  Pacific Beach Middle School has been in the process of working toward final acceptance in the Middle Years Programme and anticipates official notification in 2007.  Kate Sessions Elementary and Crown Point Elementary are also in the beginning phases of introducing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.
Resident students of Pacific Beach enrolled at Mission Bay High School can choose to participate in the International Baccalaureate program. Non Pacific Beach residents may enroll through the magnet application process.  As a magnet school, Mission Bay High School does not accept CHOICE applications.

For more information on the International Baccalaureate Program and Mission Bay High School visit the school’s website at www.missionbayhigh.com, www.ibo.org  or call (858) 273-1313.

Mission Bay High School science fair participation hits record high

PACIFIC BEACH, CA, – (January 9, 2006 ) -  When Tom Yount,  retired principal of Mission Bay High School, interviewed Dr. Susan Weinshanker for a science teaching position at Mission Bay High School five years ago one of their goals was to bring back Science Fair.

This year, Dr. Weinshanker will have over 1,000 students participating in Science Fair from a program that started with an Intel grant and just 20 students five years ago.   “This year is bigger and better as the students and staff gain momentum and enthusiasm.  We are off to a great start and I am happy to say Science Fair is officially back at Mission Bay High School.” states Weinshanker.

Additionally, for the first time ever in MBHS history, two students have been selected to participate in the prestigious Student Advisory Board for Greater San Diego Science Fair. Toriano Thomas and Ernesto Ortiz celebrated such great success with their individual Science Fair projects last year they were hand picked to advise and mentor other students at MBHS and the entire county with their pending projects.  Toriano Thomas’ Science Fair project last year went as far as an international competition representing the State of California – another first for any MBHS student.   “Both Toriano and Ernesto are inspiring other students at MBHS with their ‘yes I can’ attitude.  It is infectious and the school is benefiting greatly!” says Dr. Weinshanker.   In addition to the Student Advisory Board, Ernesto and Toriano will be at the San Diego Department of Education Office on Saturday mornings to give advice to other students participating in Science Fair throughout the county.

The top 100 MBHS students from the initial 1,000 will participate in the MBHS Site Fair on Wednesday, January 25 at the Mission Bay High School Library.  Those judged in the top 20 will move to the San Diego City Fair hosted by  MBHS this year on February 7 & 8.

For more information on MBHS, please call 858-272-3131 or visit the website at www.missionbayhigh.com.
